Engagement Photo Shoot

When I first told my mom that Kyle and I had scheduled engagement photos, she expressed her surprise that this is a common occurrence in modern wedding planning. Granted, like all holidays nowadays, the commercial aspects of weddings have seemed to increase, despite this I have been really excited to get some professional photos taken. I believe that having a memento of our relationship at this moment will be something we find we cherish in the future.

I am so glad that this is a trend, because I truly enjoyed every minute of our engagement photo session with Renee Clancy. First, we somehow convinced her to accompany us to Sedona so we'd have a unique and beautiful Southwest backdrop. Second, she agreed to climb down rocky embankments to get our photo in the middle of Oak Creek. Third, the 2-hour drive there and back flew by with our endless storytelling. It was a perfect day, sunny and calm, full of laughter.

We chose multiple backdrops, from the river with fall colored trees in the background, to the red rock walls of Sedona, to the setting sun. Ironically, my parents had traveled to Sedona years ago, when I was in high school, and found the Church of the Holy Cross. They came home and told me that they found the place where I should get married. Even though the 12-person capacity won't be enough for our guest list, we took our shots overlooking the red rocks from this location. It is crazy that time and fate have led to me moving to Arizona and meeting Kyle, and now getting our engagement pictures in the exact location my parents found over ten years ago.

We were a bit rushed to take pictures with the setting sun having hit traffic coming into the city. Renee was calm, creative, and positive throughout the entire experience, helping me to keep calm and enjoy the day. I simply cannot wait until I can get the pictures and share them with everyone!

The Lovely Paige Eden

I am so excited that we've booked our photographer. She seems to be equally as excited to work with us. Photography, as I mentioned earlier, is incredibly important to me. I wanted to feel absolutely sure that I would love my pictures, and even though we had to turn down another excellent photographer, we are incredibly optimistic that we're going to be in love with our wedding photos. I can visualize the wall of our home, covered with portraits and candids of the most important day of our relationship. Although I posted this before, visit Paige Eden's website for a preview. I also have to admit that one of my primary reasons for even checking her out was a recommendation from what I consider to be the most reliable source out there, a Delta Gamma.

When we first met with Paige, we felt like she really cared about getting to know us and our story. She seems to cater precisely to our style (really candid and creative), and she was a champion at answering our questions and dealing with Kyle's requests for frisbee pics...

The absolute BEST thing about booking her was her response to our invitation. We had asked, as the subject line of the e-mail, "Will you be ours?" I figured it would be witty and fitting for wedding photography. She was in agreement when she posted this on her Facebook page.

Prioritizing

The ironic part about this post is that I am prioritizing a new blog post over the pile of grading again, but I can't help myself after such a relaxing 3-day weekend of wedding planning!

Speaking of wedding planning, this post is dedicated to the art of prioritizing. Many wedding magazines and websites tell you to rank your budget according to what you care the most about. We certainly have to take that into account as we are looking for vendors for our wedding. I want to note, however, that sometimes the budget can be altered to fit what you really care about for your wedding. I care a heck of a lot more about photography and location than other things like bouquets, so I am currently working on securing a photographer so I can have the dream wedding pictures I've always wanted. Cost cannot come between me and amazing photographs to always remember our destination wedding!

Being an amateur bride is not my only passion. I am also an amateur photographer. I have personally taken all the images on this blog so far. I pride myself in capturing candid moments and little details at others' weddings and special occasions. Because I have to hand over all control of photography at my OWN wedding, I want only the best!

So, when it comes to my priorities, it is pretty obvious that I am going to invest a lot of my web-surfing time on scoping out photographers' websites (I started from day 1 of this engagement). The cool side effect of this is that I have also found my venue by looking at beautiful photographs of other weddings held there. I have found inspiration for poses, dresses, backgrounds, flowers, and cakes as well! So, brides, it is well worth you investment of time to look for the perfect photographer to capture your most special of days!
